Primary treatment: Remove stones, sand, grease and grease from sewage by mechanical treatment such as grid, sedimentation or air flotation.
Secondary treatment: biological treatment, the pollutants in the sewage are degraded and converted into sludge under the action of microorganisms.
Tertiary Treatment: Advanced treatment of wastewater, including removal of nutrients and disinfection of wastewater by chlorine, UV radiation or ozone. Depending on treatment goals and water quality, some wastewater treatment processes do not include all of the above.
Before the dewatering process begins, the sludge must pass through any mineral or organic chemicals such as coagulants and flocculants. After conditioning, the sludge is concentrated by dissolved air flotation, gravity belt, thickening drum/spiral drum or centrifuge.
Once the conditioning step is complete, analysis of the most suitable sludge dewatering technology can begin. The choice of sludge treatment method depends on several factors, including characteristics, volume, time and available disposal options. Common dewatering options are plate and frame presses, membrane presses, box presses, belt presses, centrifuges and screw presses.

Sludge dewatering focuses on reducing weight and volume to minimize waste disposal costs. Therefore, water removal is the primary means of volume reduction until the sludge by-product can be disposed of economically.

Dry, high-solids cakes mean lower costs. The use of dewatering equipment is an effective tool for managing sludge build-up, which can reduce transportation and storage costs.
Once the sludge is dewatered and the treated water is free of hazards and contaminants, it can be recycled and reused by industry and the community. For example, steam power plants use reclaimed water to provide electricity services to communities.
Many people consider filter presses to be labor-intensive equipment. In fact, sludge dewatering filter presses can be automated with automatic cloth washers, mechanically assisted filter cake release and complex control systems that allow communication with the main plant control system.
Reduce the amount of waste to a more compact and easier-to-handle size. While the dry cake is disposed of, the reuse of the filtrate reduces the need for new water sources for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, as well as the overall volume of water required for treatment.
